The Ebola virus is
also known as Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever. It is one of the deadliest diseases
known to man. It kills up to 90% of all its victims. Its symptoms include
a sudden fever, weakness, pain in muscles, a headache and a sore throat.
These symptoms begin four to sixteen days after the infection. Next comes
vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, limited kidney and body functions and internal
and external bleeding. In 1976, the Ebola virus killed 340 people in Zaire.
There was no medicine for the people there. Scientists couldn't find a
cure because they couldn't find a source of the virus. There is still no
cure today. Scientists have been studying Ebola from 1976 to 1996. Ebola
is one of the RNA viruses known as filoviruses. The RNA filoviruses are
the Marburg virus and the four Ebola viruses. The four Ebola viruses are
Ebola Zaire, Ebola Reston, Ebola Sudan and Ebola Tai. Ebola Reston only
attacks monkeys. It spreads airborne. If the other Ebola viruses that attack
humans were spread airborne, the result would be deadly. All the types
of Ebola except Ebola Reston spread through personal contact. The first
and only outbreak of Ebola Reston was in 1989 in Reston, Virginia. Even
though scientists have studied Ebola for 20 years there is still a lot
to know about it. It is very hard to get a specimen of the virus to study
it because it is so deadly. Many organizations are trying to fight off
Ebola. Many scientists have been sent to Zaire to study and control Ebola.
They collect specimens and study them. Most of all they try to find the
source of Ebola. Some doctors dealing with patients that had
Ebola got infected. Ebola is one very deadly virus and hopefully people
will find a cure for it soon. |
