On Aug. 6, 1945 the first atomic bomb was dropped on the industrial island of Hiroshima . On that tragic day in August, the bomb killed 200,000 Japanese people and leveled the city. The island of Hiroshima was an important commercial and industrial city manufacturing motor vehicles, steel, rubber and furniture. When the bomb was dropped the explosion leveled half the city. The population was about 343,000, afterwards it was about 100,000 alive. Still, most were injured or died later from radiation. Only 235 people were uninjured in the incident. Still the radiation disease goes around. Hiroshima was built on 7 different islands. Each island had its own structures. After the bomb was dropped most of the structures were destroyed but some of the well built structures escaped with minor damage. Nagasaki was bombed as well. Japan surrendered to allies 4 days later . A few days after that came the end of World War II. After the war ended America helped rebuild the cities damaged. One of the head generals in the rebuilding was General Mac Arthur. He and many others built back these cities. Hiroshima is now known as '' City of Peace '' in hopes that this may never happen again.
