There are four pieces of equipment needed for skiing. They are skis, bindings, boots and poles. Here is the equipment needed for cross-country skiing:

Racing

200cm to 220cm; little or no sidecut

cut below ankle with leather or nylonuppers.

500cm wide, aluminum, alloy, or plastic toe clips

stiff shafts, various shapes of small baskets, asymmetrical or round

Touring

180cm to 200cm;8-11cm sidecut

cut above ankle like hiking boots

aluminum, alloy,or steel toe clips with heal cables

same as light-touring poles but with basket diameter of 41/2in.-6in.

Light-Touring

165cm to 185cm;2-4cm sidecut

cut at ankle like men's, some with groove at heel

Aluminum, alloy, or plastic toe clips

shafts larger than racing, baskets 4in. in diameter

Ski Mountaineering

over 180-200cm; 9-12cm sidecut

single or double-layer mountaineering boots, often with lug sole

for use with mountaineering boots. Some models have alpine type release features

shafts stronger than touring poles, baskets over 5in. in diameter
