The Airplane Then

On December 17, 1903 two men, Orville and Wilbur Wright, set out to do the unimaginable: to soar with the birds, in an aircraft made only with wood, wire, fabric, and other common items. They were aloft for twelve seconds, and only went a mere 120 feet, still it was a miracle in their time.

These are the measurements of the Wright's plane...

Wingspan:

12.3 m (40 ft and 4 in)

Length:

6.4 m (21 ft)

Height:

2.8 m (9 ft and 3 in)

Weight, empty:

274 kg (605 lbs.)

Engine:

Gasoline, 12 hp

Manufacturer:

Orville and Wilbur Wright, Dayton, Ohio, 1903

People back then had to go on a boat to get across oceans. After the airplane was improved they went on an airplane instead of a stinking, seasick, wet trip!
