Starfish

Starfish are really not fish at all.  There are more than 3,000 types of starfish and they can be found in all of our world oceans.  Most starfish live for only three to five years, but, some live longer.  A starfish has a spiny skinned body with thick arms.  Most starfish have five arms, while others may have as many as 40 or more.  A starfish is also called a sun star because their shape looks like the sun and its rays.  Many starfish can drop off arms to defend themselves.  If a starfish loses an arm it is able to grow it back!  Most starfish eat mussels, clams, and oysters.  A starfish is unique in how it eats.  When a starfish finds something to eat it pushes its whole stomach out through a small opening on its underside.  With the stomach turned inside out it surrounds the meaty potion of the prey, digests it, and then the starfish pulls the stomach back in.  Starfish are not eaten by people.
