Sea Otter

The Sea Otter lives off the coast of Alaska, California, and the Aleutian Islands.  It eats shellfish, crabs, sea urchins, fish, and seaweed.  It is 3 to 4 feet long and weighs 50 to 100 pounds.  The sea otter is endangered because in the early 1900's hundreds, it was overhunted for its furs.  People paid a lot of money for these furs.  But it is being protected and it's numbers have increased.  An otter can dive 130 feet to look for food.  The mother carries her young on her stomach  while swimming on her back.  The sea otter falls asleep on her back wrapped in seaweed.
