RAYS

Rays are found on the sandy and muddy bottoms of the warm ocean waters.  Most live in the coastal waters, but, a few live in deep waters.  The are several different groups of rays, and these include: skates, sawfish, shark rays, electric rays, stingrays, eagle rays, and giant rays (devilfish).    Rays range in size from about 6 feet to 22 feet.  All rays have flat bodies with the eyes on the top of its body facing upward, and the mouth and gills on the underside of its body.  The rays near the coast like to eat mollusks (clams, oysters), shellfish, sea worms, and other fish, while, the deep water rays eat plankton.  A ray's young hatch from eggs.  Female skates lay fertlized eggs, where as, the other types of rays hatch the eggs inside their body and the young are born alive.
