Hawaiian Monk Seal

The Hawaiian Monk Seal lives in the shallow waters around Hawaii.  It is about 6 and 1/2 feet long and weighs about 300 pounds.  It eats mainly fish and invertebrates such as mollusks and echinoderms.  Apart from humans, sharks are their most feared enemy.  It is protected by CITES treaty which prevents if from being hunted by man.  In 1911 it was declared almost extinct, so it was classified as a species in danger of extinction and this protects it completely.
