Galapagos Fur Seal

The Galapagos Fur Seal lives on and in the waters of the Galapagos Islands, which is located just off the coast of Ecuador in South America.  It eats fish  that it finds along the islands.  It is about 5 feet long.  Its population dramatically decreased as a result of hunting.  Hunting began in the 1500s and got worse in the 1800s.  The galapagos fur seal is the smallest of all the seals in the southern hemisphere.  It doesn't like humans on land but it is fine in water. This species was thought to be extinct because of the extreme hunting  in the 1800s.  In order to save the Galapagos Fur Seal they have declared the Galapagos Islands a national park.
