| Rabies: Rabies is an acute, viral disease transmitted through the bite of an animal. The best way to treat rabies in a dog is to give the dog a shot regularly. The incubation period of the virus is normally 12 to 30 days, but it could last as long as six months. |

| Hookworms: Hookworms are parasites that live under the ground. Hookworms are a type of long skinny worm. Large numbers of hookworms may cause anemia, which could lead to the dogs collapse. In less serious cases, hookworms cause black diarrhea and weakness. |

| Fleas: Fleas are a lot smaller than flies but look sort of like them. When you see a dog scratching he probably has fleas. The bites from fleas are extremely irritating and itchy. Fleas are not a serious matter, but they make your dog itch. You can get rid of fleas by putting a flea collar on your dog. You can buy a flea collar at your local pet store. |

| Heartworms: Heartworms are another type of worm. They can grow up to 12 inches in a dog`s body. A dog usually gets heartworms because they wade in the mud with some sort of cut on their foot. The heartworm enters through the foot. Heartworms infect the right ventricle of the heart. Heartworms are a pretty serious matter but they can be treated. You can treat heartworms by surgical or drug removal. Tell your veterinarian if you think your dog has heartworms. |

| Ticks: Ticks are infectious parasites that attach themselves to dogs and suck their blood. Ticks are not that serious but they do suck blood, which could make your dog very weak. Dogs usually get ticks when they are in the woods in the summer. Tweezers can remove ticks after dipping the tweezers in rubbing alcohol. |

| Fever: to find out if a dog has a fever you can feel its nose. If it is hot and dry your dog has a temperature. The dogs temperature should be 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. To take the temperature cover a thermometer in vaseline. Lift the dog`s tail up and insert the thermometer through the dog`s anus. A digital thermometer works best. If your dog has a temperature you should cool it off and give it some cold water. |
