Almost half of the world's chameleon species live on the island of Madagascar.  Beyond their uniqueness to the island, chameleons are unique creatures in their own right.  Known for ability to change color, or to become camouflaged, they are really an amazing animal.  They can even communicate with each other using their color!

Chameleons have a long, sticky tongue to catch their prey.   They also have thin, long legs that raise from the ground when walking.  Their eyes can move in any direction and change colors when they are frightened.  Males have three horns which are sometimes used for combat, and females have claws under their legs.

Chameleons have a short neck and four legs.  They also have tails that can grasp a branch if needed.

Some other places to find chameleons are: Africa, Spain, southern Europe, Arabia, India, Sri Linka, Seychelles Islands, and rarely on the mountains of Hawaii.

Chameleons are an interesting pet, and depending on the species of chameleon, they can be quite expensive.  But it is fun to watch them extend their long, sticky tongue to catch their prey.
