
Vampire bats, also known as their scientific name Desmodus rotundus, feed on the blood of mammals and birds. Since they're mammals they have five claws into wings. A vampire bat's front feet have evolved into wings. By using echolocation, a vampire bat can navigate in dark caves at night or judge the distance between its prey using high frequency sounds it gives off. Vampire bats are also nocturnal or active during night. There are two kinds of bats and they're Megachiroptera (Megabats) and Microchiroptera (Microbats). The vampire bat is a Microchiroptera bat or microbat.
There are many varieties of vampire bats. Vampire bats mostly live in caves underground but can also live in hollow trees, foliage, crevices in rocks, and in spaces under the bark of trees. Vampire bats are very interesting creatures. If you wish to find out more go to your local library.
