A terrapin is an air-breathing, slow-growing turtle, which is a reptile.  The terrapin takes seven or eight years just to grow 5 inches. They eat crabs, clams, snails, and other water creatures. Sometimes a large terrapin will eat ducklings. The female is larger than the male. She lays 8 to 20 egga each year in the sand. It takes two months for them to hatch. Then the babies have to crawl back to the water. Terrapins hibernate in the winter.

At one time people were afraid that the terrapin would become extinct, it is listed as a protected species, and they can only be caught for a short time each year. They are caught as food, and often prepared as a stew.
