These pictures show the beginning of the Chesapeake Bay. The first picture shows what the Chesapeake Bay looked like 10,000 years ago as the Susquehanna River. The second picture shows the Chesapeake Bay today. In the pictures below, you can see this process. The Chesapeake Bay was formed 100,000 years ago during the last Ice Age. Before that the Susquehanna River flowed directly down to the Atlantic Ocean. When the ice covered the land , its weight pressed the land down. When the ice melted, the water flooded the low land and formed the bay. Now the Susquehanna River flows into the Chesapeake Bay near Havre de Grace in Maryland, and the Bay empties into the ocean. . |
