Welcome to Nature.  Much of what is now Washington, D.C. was once marshland, dense with underbrush.  The city lies between the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers.  The Potomac River rises in the Blue Ridge Mountains at the western-most tip of Maryland.  It empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Chesapeake Bay.  Today, 650 cherry trees of two varieties bloom in West Potomac Park.  Several others grow in East Potomac Park.  Cherry blossom trees are very popular, and were donated to Washington, D.C. as a gift.  The mayor of Tokyo`s trees were imported from different countries.
