| Welcome to the history of Washington D.C. |
| Washington D. C. has been our nation's capital since the 1800`s. In 1783, Congress decided upon a permanent capital for the United States. In 1790, Secretary Treasurer, Alexander Hamilton, decided it should be on government owned property. George Washington hired Pierre Charles L`Enfant, a French engineer, to help plan the city. The American surveyors, Andrew Elliot and Benjamin Banneker, helped work out plans. Congress tried many different locations for the capital, but never could agree. It was ten square miles when George Washington first chose it. John Quincy Adams was the first president to live in the White House. During the War of 1812, the British set fire to many of our government buildings, including the White House. In 1789, George Washington formed the governmental cabinet. Construction began on the Washington Memorial in 1848, and finished in 1885. |
