Hugh Lofting was born in 1886 in Maidenhead, England.  He was educated well in London by two different Institutes.  Lofting served the British army in World War 1.  This is when he started writing.  His first book of the famous Dr. Doolittle series was started in 1920.  Both children and adults loved his books about a man who talked to animals.  In 1967,  a musical film was made about Dr. Doolittle.  Hugh Lofting died in 1947.
