A hurricane is a powerful whirling storm that is formed over the West Indies or the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The winds near the center of the hurricane blow at speeds of seventy-four miles per hour or more! Hurricanes develop from a long narrow region of low-pressure. These low-pressure areas turn into a tropical storm which then turn into a hurricane.
A hurricane is a tropical cyclone. Hurricanes have great destructive power. This is because the winds surrounding the center are blowing at very high speeds. The center of the storm, called the eye, is very calm, with virtually no clouds or winds.
