The Story of a
Bean
Dear Journal,
Here I am in the middle of an orchard inside
a berry. Who am I? Why it's me, Cuppa Joe,
of course. I am a coffee bean, which means that I am actually the
seed of the berry. I've been hanging
on this shrub for a long time. The shrub has
glossy, evergreen leaves and is about six
feet high. It also has little white blossoms
that smell like Jasmine. The plant I am on
produces enough berries to make about one
and one-half pounds of roasted coffee in a
year. I know I am at least five years old since
a coffee plant is usually five to eight years old
before it bears a full crop. My tree should
live for about fifteen years after the first batch of berries is
harvested. I live in a tropical climate at an altitude ranging from
3,600 to 8,000 feet. I am round and I'm with my best friend,
Cappa
Chino. We grow with our flat sides facing each other inside the
berry.
Sincerely,
Cuppa Joe
