Lee’s birthday is a legal holiday in most southern states. Lee was unlike many Southerners, he did not believe in slavery, and he didn’t like secession, either. He also thought that slavery had an evil effect on slaves and masters. Some time before the war, Lee freed the few slaves that he inherited. Lee admired George Washington greatly. He greatly hated the thought of a divided nation. He came to think that his state was protecting the liberty, freedom, and legal principles that Washington had fought for. He was willing to fight what the South considered a second war of independence. Lee had much difficulty deciding whether to stand by his native state or remain with the Union, even thought Lincoln offered the field command of the United States Army.He was born 1807 and died 1870.
