My Interview with the Sheriff
by Catherine

I spoke with Sheriff Rick Hord who is the Sheriff of Okaloosa County in Florida.

Catherine: Who rebuilds the roads?

Sheriff Hord: After Opal, a very devastating storm, Okaloosa Asphalt rebuilt Highway 98 and F.E.M.A. paid [for it.]

Catherine: Is there looting?

Sheriff Hord: Yes, that is a bad problem. That is one of the reasons that we have to keep the islands evacuated. Hundreds of houses were looted.

Catherine: What kind of law enforcement problems do you have after a hurricane?

Sheriff Hord: Most of the time we have very good cooperation. Very few people commit burglary.

Catherine: Do you have to keep people off of the beaches?

Sheriff Hord: We try to let them get on the beaches unless it is absolutely necessary [to keep them off.]
