Watch out for the storm surge!

My Evacuating Experience
By Jennifer

I have evacuated lots of times in my life. When we evacuate we have two major things we do before leaving. One is we have to make sure everything in the house is safe so if the hurricane does make land fall, special or important belongings don’t get damaged. Another thing we have to do is take our sailboat out into deep water and anchor it really good. I will tell some things about all of my experiences with that.

To make sure everything is safe we have to move a lot of things. It is not very much fun! I usually help my Mom and my brothers help my Dad. Mom and I first put all of our pictures under her bed. Then we’ll usually take all of the special keepsakes that we’ve made, bought, or received in low safe places like under the other beds or under the dining room table.

When it’s time to anchor the sailboat my Uncle Scott comes over. He helps my dad. They have to sail out really far so that it will be nice and tight. They have to use two anchors to secure the boat. Then they have to swim back to shore. I wait in the car with my mom and brothers. After my dad and uncle dry off, they get into the car with us. Then we drive home so they can change. Afterwards Uncle Scott goes home and the next morning we evacuate. When we leave the next day it seems like a year before we get to my grandma’s house in Alabama! On the way I’m always asking, "Are we there yet?" The answer is always "NO!" We don’t even stop to go to the bathroom because the traffic is so bad.

Now you know all about my evacuating experience.

My Hurricane Experience
By John Paul

My family evacuated for hurricane Opal in 1995.  We left two days early because we were going to my dad's 35th High School Reunion.  There was a lot of traffic getting out of town.  But we didn't see the hurricane.  We didn't get into trouble at home because we had to go to my dad's high school reunion.

During hurricane Georges,I slept. But,there was lots of lightning, and thunder, and rain. I can remember one time,a big bolt of lightning hit nearby. There was a huge flash, even bigger sound. The next morning, there was a lot of branches, twigs, leaves, and puddles everywhere.

My Hurricane Experience
by Catherine

My hurricane experiences are not that exciting, but I will share them with you. This year, we experienced two hurricanes, Earl and Georges. We did the same thing in both hurricanes. First, my mom got a big jug of water ready, just in case the water went off. Next, my dad asked everyone if we wanted to play Scrabble or as we call it, our "hurricane game." Another game that we played was Twister. Out of the corner of our eye we would always be watching the news. There was a lot of rain… a whole lot of rain. I got tired of staying inside, so my brother and I went out in the rain and raced around the mailbox. He fell down and I won. The power flickered, but never really went off. The hurricane never really got close enough to do very much damage, unless of course you lived on the water. I have never evacuated, and I don’t think that I ever will.
