POWERS

If you have been at the charts, which you probably have, this page will help you understand what powers are.

What are powers? Well, they aren't the stuff Superman uses. In mathematics, powers are the way you write some numbers in a shortcut. Here is how you figure out powers.

Positive Powers

Take any number, 10 for example.

The power is how many times you use the number to multiply, for example the 2nd power.

This is what 10 to the 2nd power looks like: 102 or 10 x 10 which equals 100.

Negative Powers

If the power says NEGATIVE, you have to multiply the original number by a smaller number: a fraction.

Let's take 10 as the base number again and the negative 2nd power as the power.

The 10 to the 2nd power normally is 100, so that is the denominator. Take 1 as the numerator. This makes the number 1/100 or .01.
