Metric Prefixes

CHART

This chart has some of the prefixes that the metric system uses. The prefixes go before any metric unit (meter, liter, gram, etc.). To figure out what the prefix means, think like this:

The small number above the 10 in the exponent column (called the exponent or power) tells you how many zeros are after the number 1 - unless it is negative. Then it tells how many decimal places there are after the decimal point.

The prefix tells you how many metric units (meter, liter,etc.) you use. For example, since the mega- prefix means 1,000,000 - a megameter is 1,000,000 meters.
