The Cheesy Field Trip

Our team went to Merkt's Cheese Factory. At Merkt's, they only made spreads and sauces, but we got a ton of information. We learned that a lot of butter is added to every cheese spread, every cheese spread starts out as a solid block of cheese, all cheeses can be made into 10,000 pound blocks, cheese is aged in storage rooms that have temperatures of 40 degrees, and that some cheeses have wine in them.

After the people at the factory had touched the cheese, they had to put their hands in this chemical that kills germs and bacteria. You would have to wear earplugs or ear protectors if you would work in a cheese factory (in certain rooms).

Did you know that if you put cheese in a cardboard box, the cheese could get bacteria on it. To keep the cheese clean in the factory, they have to wash the walls, pipes (the insides too), the floors, and the ceiling to keep the cheese from getting bacteria and disease causing organisms.
