Cheese History


The first cheese was probably made 4,000 years ago by the nomadic tribes of Asia. Through the years cheese making spread to Europe.

Cheese making started in the American colonies in the year 1611. An American dairyman started the nation's first cheese factory near Rome, NY. J.L. Kraft patented a method for making processed cheese and developed a way to wrap cheese individually.

During the 1970's, scientists developed methods of removing proteins and milk sugar from whey. Most whey had been thrown away beforehand. Today, these substances are added to baby food, bread, ice cream, processed cheese, and lots, lots more.
