Kaua'i and Ni'ihau

 

Two of the oldest major islands in the Hawaiian island chain are Kaua'i and Ni'ihau. They are two very special island like no other.

Kaua'i's nickname is the Garden isle. It is called the Garden isle because of its beautiful green plants. Kaua'i is known for it's natural beauty.

The flower that represents this island is the Mokihana. The color that represents this island is purple. The island is between 5- 6 million years old and has one volcano, Mount Wai'aleale. It is the wettest spot on earth. Kaua'i is home to Waimea Canyon. It is also known as the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.

There is a legend about menehunes (little people) that built Alakoko fishpond in one night for a prince and princess they loved. The fishpond is still around till this day.

 

Ni'ihau

Ni'ihau's nickname is the Forbidden Isle. It is called the Forbidden isle because not to much people are allowed there. It is a privately owned island bought by the Robinson family from King Kamehameha the Fifth. You can live on this island only if you are Hawaiian.

Ni'ihau is a low lying island between 8-9 million years old. It was formed by a extinct volcano that formed the island of Kauai. The highest pointon the island is about 1,281 feet called Pani'au.

The flower that represents this island is lei pupu. Ni'ihau is known for it's delicate shells that can only be found on this island called Pupu shells. People pay a lot of money for necklaces made from these shells because it is so rare.
