Hundreds of thousands of years after the Wai'anae and Ko'olau volcanoes became extinct, smaller secondary eruptions occurred. Secondary eruptions of tuff cones occur when magma that was trapped as the island moves away from the hot spot, bursts and causes small eruptions.
