The first Tony Awards was held in 1947 with Vera Allen as hostess. The
awards are handed out each June under the categories of Best Musical,
Play, Revival of a musical/play, performance by a leading actress/actor
in a musical/play, director play/musical, choreography, score, book, performance
by a featured actress/actor in a play/musical, scenic design, lighting
