The Amazon Rain Forest has many great things such as the mighty Amazon River, as well as, over 1,000 more rivers.  A Spanish conquistador named Francisco de Orellana in 1541 found the Amazon River.  He called it the Rio Mar, the River Sea.  It is a mighty and long river.  It is the second longest river in the world.  It is over 4,000 feet long.  In 1913, former president Theodore Roosevelt went to the Amazon Rain Forest and discovered a 1,000 mile-long Amazon tributary, which he named after himself.  The Amazon River provides one-fifth of the fresh water in the world.  Hundreds of their rvers are navigable, and it has over 50,000 miles of navigable trunk rivers.  The depth of the river varies from 200 feet to a few inches, as the sandbars build up.  The width of the Amazon River depends on the season. At a place where the river may be five miles wide during the dry season, it may become 20 or more miles wide during the wet season.  The average water speed in the wet season is seven kilometers per hour.  It can get up to 50 kilometers in the wet season in some places.  The average water speed is 2.5 kilometers per hour in the dry season.  When the tide flows out, over five million gallons of water pours into the Atlantic Ocean.  The Amazon River is 2,700,000 square miles.  The Amazon River`s average temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
