Turtles are
reptiles. The first turtle fossils that were found are 2,000,000
years old. The leather back turtle can grow more than two meters in length
and weigh more than 110 pounds. Some turtles, like the box turtle, can
pull in all their body parts and stay closed for protection.
Some turtles go to the bottom of lakes and streams
when it gets cold. They also bury themselves in the soil during the
cold time.
All turtles go
ashore to lay their eggs. The female turtle digs a hole with
her hind legs to lay the eggs in the hole. After covering the hole
and patting it, she goes back to the ocean. The eggs are white.
The mud mask turtles lay eggs that are less than one inch long in diameter.
