| The rainforest is divided into four different layers: the emergent, the canopy, the understory, and the forest floor. If you flew over the emergent layer, you would see a long blanket of green. In the canopy, birds, insects, and sometimes monkeys make their homes. Now we swing down to the understory where more monkeys and more insects live. Down in the understory almost nothing is wasted. That is because the trees, leaves, and branches that have fallen decompose. Little nutrients are wasted because insects and plants eat them. |
