We are here with Mrs. Ayres, our teacher.
She is helping us with our project. She has been to the Amazon Rainforest
three times. We asked her some questions about her trip.
What did you see? We saw a variety of animals; insects, birds, frogs, and mammals. We saw many kinds of plants, and we met some of the people who live there. When were you there? I was there during the summers of 1993, 1994 and 1995. Where were you? I was in the Amazon Rainforest area of Peru. Why were you there? I was there to fulfill a dream and to learn. Did you get to see the Amazon River? Yes. We took a boat down the river on a four hour trip into the jungle. I even got to swim with the pink dolphins and fish for piranha. We also caught other fish using large nets. How did you get there? We flew in a plane from Miami to Iquitos, Peru. Then we rode on a boat into the jungle. Where is Iquitos? Iquitos is a city in Peru on the Amazon River. The only way to get to Iquitos is by plane or by boat. There are no roads to other cities from there. What was your favorite animal that you saw on your trip? I liked the Sloth because it was so slow and different from anything I've ever seen before. Did you meet any natives? What were they like? Yes, I got to go to a native school. We had canoe races, played games, and had a special ceremony. They also showed us how they make many of the things they survive with; like blowguns, weaving, and carving paddles for canoes. A school teacher invited me to his house and showed me inside. There I saw a TV. Although there was no power he was very proud of having TV. What advice would you like to tell people who are thinking of going to the rainforest? If you dream of going to the rainforest, go now. It will change the way you look at life. You will appreciate the beauty of nature. Just be sure to bring plenty of bug repellent. |
