ARCHEOLOGY GLOSSARY


ANCEINT - Very old

ARCHEOLOGY - The study of past poeples remains. The finding and uncovering of ancient peoples, places, and tools.

CANYON - a large pit or hole where many tools, pottery, and other crucial finds are found.

DECAY - To break down into different parts

DEGRADING - To reduce from a higher to a lower rank or degree

DWELLINGS - Residence or home.

ETHIOPIA - A country in Africa where many findings have been reported.

FOSSIL- A remnant or trace of a past organism from a past geologic age, an imprint of a skeleton, or a plant.

HIEROGLYPHICS - The egyptian alphabet and writing.

PILTDOWN MAN - Supposedly an early species of man, found to be a hoax

POTTERY - Articals made from clay that is shaped while moist and hardened by heat.

ROSSETTA - A stone slab with hieroglyphics.

RUIN - The remains of something destroyed.

SPHINX - the large egyptian statue with a human head and a lion's body, creating a naturalistic contrast.

TOMB - a vault or chamber where mummies and the dead are kept and burried.
