GLOSSARY


Bitumen- A sticky substance found in the earth. Made by petroleum.

Chariot- an ancient horse drawn 2-wheeled vehicle used in a war, races, and processions

Embalm- a metehod that prevents the decay of a corpse.

Hieroglyphics- the Egyptians called it the words of the gods. It is Greek and it means sacred writing in stone.

Mummy- the body of a human or animal in which the soft tissues did not decay after death.

Nomads- a member of a people having no fixed home.

Oasis- a fertile or green spot, one with water in a desert.

Ochre- a mineral oxide of iron with varying amounts of sand and clay.

Pharaoh- a new king in Egypt.

Pyramid- a large triangular structure found in Egypt.

Resin- a type of tree sap that is very sticky and becomes very hard when exposed to the air.

Sarcophagus- a coffin made of stone.

Temple- a place or building dedicated to the worship.

Tomb- a burial chamber for dead people.
