Summer of the Monkeys
by Wilson Rawls

We worked with our teacher to make this project happen.  We asked our teacher to have the other kids in our class write about different parts of the book.  We also asked them to draw pictures of each part.  We think they did very well.  If you would like to see the pictures in more detail, just click on the picture.  We hope you enjoy our project.
If you have read Summer of the Monkeys or Where the Red Fern Grow, we would love to see pictures you have drawn and summaries of your favorite parts of the books.  Send them as attachments by clicking here(link disabled). Please keep graphics small. If we think they are neat, we will post them.  Thanks. We can't wait to hear from you.

My favorite part was when Jay Berry and his dad tried to catch the monkeys with a net.
Jay Berry and his dad go to the bottoms to dig a hole.  He had a net.  In the morning, Jay Berry goes to the bottoms to get in the hole.  He is sitting in the hole when a bee starts to buzz around.  He thought the bee would sting him, so he almost jumped out of the hole.  A snake crawled over him.  After that, he thought it was over and then two monkeys got stuck in the net.

I liked the part when Jay Berry gets beaten up by the monkeys.
I pulled out my bean shooter and hit the $100 monkey smack dab on the chest.  Then I started running.  My clothes got caught on little bushes.  I looked back and saw that they were gaining on me and Rowdy.  I felt something on my shirt.  I looked down and saw a little monkey on my shirt.  Before I knew it, they were all over me and Rowdy.  When I finally got over our gate and up to our house, Daisy was all over me.  After about a minute, she yelled for mom.  The same second, she yelled, mom came running out of the house.  Her jaw dropped and she said, "Jay Berry, what in the lands happended to you."
"Oh nothing, I just got a close look at the monkeys," I said.
"A little too close," Daisy said with a giggle.

"Ribbons in the Tree" by Travis
Travis
I liked when the monkeys steal the ribbons and coconuts.
Jay Berry and Grandpa went to get a drink of water from Jay Berry's Spring.  They heard a noise from the wagon.  They ran back to the wagon and the ribbons were gone and so were the coconuts.  He looked up and there was the prettiest tree that he ever did see.  In the bucket, he saw his gunny sack, gun shooter, and briches.  Then they went home.

"Losing His Britches" by Kayla
Kayla
My favorite part was when the monkeys got Jay Berry drunk.
Jay Berry was trying to catch the monkeys.  He was trying to catch the monkey by being friends with Jimbo.  He finds the monkeys by the whisky still.  They're getting drunk.  Jay Berry gives Jimbo an apple.  Jimbo gave Jay Berry sour mash.  It made Jay Berry drunk.  Jay Berry fell asleep and the monkeys took his britches.

I liked when Daisy goes to see Jay Berry during the storm.
It was a stormy night, Jay Berry couldn't go back to sleep because of the thunder and lightning.  He heard the door creek open and there was Daisy walking on her old crutch.  She was scared of the thunder and lightning, so was Jay Berry, but nobody knew that.  Daisy always came into his room on nights like this.  "Jay Berry, I'm scared.  Can I lay with you?"
    "Sure," he said,
"Guess what?  I saw the Old Man of the Mountains, he was pointing the stick at us."
"So we're going to have bad luck?" asked Jay Berry.
"No, he was smiling when he pointed it at us, so we're going to get good luck," said Daisy.
"So when he's pointing the stick at us and frowning, we get bad luck and when he's pointing the stick at us and smiling, we get good luck," said Jay Berry.
"Yes," said Daisy. "I'm going back to my own room.  I feel better now.  Thank-you."
    "You're welcome," said Jay Berry.

"Fairy Ring" by Rachel
Rachel
My favorite part was when they found the fairy ring.
"Mama, Mama, come quick," Daisy said.  Mama came running out of the door as fast as she could.
"What is it, Daisy?" Mama said.
"A Fairy Ring!" Mama looked at the fairy ring and couldn't believe it.
"The Old Man of the Mountains said if you have found a fairy ring, you step in it and make a wish," Daisy said.
"So let's make our wishes," said Papa.  Jay Berry went in the fairy ring and made his wish.  He was going to wish for a pony and a .22, but then he thought about Daisy and that crippled leg of hers.  Instead, he wished for Daisy's leg to be fixed.
  Bobby
My favorite part was when Rowdy made his wish.
When everybody was done making their wishes, they all left except Jay Berry and his dad.  Jay Berry and his dad started talking and walking.  Then rowdy jumped in the fairy ring and made a wish.  Jay Berry said, "I could be wrong, but I think that dog's making a wish.  Well, if he is, he's probably wishing for a big chunk of meat or ham."

"The Reward" by Seb
Seb
My favorite part was when the circus people came to get the monkeys and to give the reward to Jay Berry.
    A car pulled up.
"Is this the Lee home?" a man asked.
"It is," Papa said, trying to be polite.
"Which one of you is Jay Berry?" the first man said.
"I am," Jay Berry said nervously.
"Do you have any monkeys for us two?" another man asked.
"Yes sir, in the corn crib." Jay Berry said excited.
"May we see them?" the first man said.
When Jimbo saw them, he ran as fast as he could to them.
"Well, son, I believe you have earned a reward," the first man said.  He started mumbling to himself. "Oh here's your reward, $156.00."
Mama said, "Will you stay for coffee?"
"A thank-you ma'am, but we need to get onto the next town," the second man said.
The first man shook Jay Berry's and Papa's hands. After the men were gone, Jay Berry turned to Daisy and said, "Here, I owe you this."  He handed her a 5 dollar bill and a 1 dollar bill.

"Dolly" by Rachel
My favorite part was when Jay Berry was picking out his pony .   Jay Berry was all excited about the two pony's,( The Paint and Roan.)   Jay Berry liked them both very much, but in his dreams it was always was a Paint.  Then  Jay Berry saw that the Paint was limping.  Jay berry looked down at the pony's  back leg.  It was cut and fly's where sworming around the pony's leg.
Jay Berry felt so sad for the pony's leg. And the Pony's leg reminded Jay Berry about daisy's old leg.  Jay Berry ran to his Grandpa's shop to tell him about the Paint.  His Grandpa said that
you could take it to an animal doctor but would not be able to ride the Pony for about 3 weeks if
the Pony got Doctoring on it's leg.

I liked the part where Jay Berry tries to cook.
Jay Berry said, "Hey Papa, come here.  You work in the field and I'll cook dinner."
"Jay Berry, I don't think you should cook," said Papa.
"Oh, Papa, I watch Mama every day before dinner," said Jay Berry.  "Cooking looks easy."
"Yes, maybe it looks easy," said Papa.
"Go in the field and don't worry. O.K."
First he got out some beans and a big pot on the stove.  Then he put some eggs on.  He didn't even take off the shell.  Then he went to the celler to get some apples.  When he went to the celler to get some apples.  When he got back, the four eggs were exploding and the beans were over flowing!  There was smoke!  And some of the beans were starting to pop all over.  It was terrible!  Then Papa came into help clean up.  It seemed to be that Papa didn't know much about cooking either.

Jordan
My favorite part was when they got back and Grandpa had a surprise for Jay Berry.
Papa packed the wagon and drove away.  Mama said that we have company.  Jay Berry looked up.  He said, "Grandpa's here."
Then Daisy looked up.  "Oh my, it's a paint."  Papa parked the wagon.
    Grandpa said, "How is Daisy?"
Daisy got out of the wagon, she said to Jay Berry, "What's her name?"
"Oh, I forgot all about her."
"WHAT?" said Daisy.  "How can you forget her name?  She looks just like a doll.
"That's it!  I'll call her Dolly."
