Glossary
 
 
Block- a section of track that is divided from other sections by brakes, chain lifts, and other devices.
 
Brakes- brakes are the device that slows the train. They operate by squeezing or rubbing against the rail or track.
 
Car- a car is the part of the train that the passengers ride in.
 
Chain lift- a motorized chain that pulls the train up the lift hill.
 
Corkscrew- a corkscrew is an inversion element that resembles a corkscrew.
 
Figure eight- the layout of a coaster track that resembles the numeral eight.
 
First drop- the highest drop on a coaster, used to gain momentum.
 
Inversion- any part of a coaster circuit that turns upside down.
 
Inverted- a coaster that rides below the track rather than on the track, commonly known as suspended.
 
Lap bar- the most commonly used restraint. It keeps riders from flying out of the car.
 
Lift hill- the track containing the device that lifts a coaster up a hill.
 
Pipe line- a type of coaster designed by Arrow Dynamics, in which the cars ride in between two rails, allowing such movements as barrel rolls to be performed.
 
Racer- any multi-tracked coaster that runs trains that leave simultaneously and race each other.
 
Restraint- a device used to prevent riders from leaving the proper riding position.
 
Roller coaster- an elevated rail way with small open passenger cars. It`s used as amusement park entertainment.
 
Seat belt- a restraint used to keep riders from unauthorized movement. It has the same basic design as a car or airplane seat belt.
 
Shoulder restraint- a restraint. It comes down over the rider`s shoulders and locks them in so they can`t fly out of the car.
 
Side friction- a coaster with guide rails located above and on the outside of the running rails, instead of using guide wheels or up stop wheels.
 
Single loop- a coaster lay out that contains a single vertical loop as it`s only inversion.
 
Steel coaster- any coaster with steel rails.
 
Steel structure- a feature of a wooden coaster, where the underlying structure is made of steel.
 
Suspended- a coaster that rides below the track, rather than on the track.
 
Train- a group of two or more cars attached to each other.
 
Vertical loop- sometimes just called a loop. It`s a nearly closed vertical turn of 360 degrees.
 
Wheel- a coaster car uses three different types of wheels.
1. Road wheel- a wheel that runs on top of the track. It carries the car.
 
2. Up stop wheel- a set of wheels, which ride underneath the track to prevent the train from jumping off the track.
 
3. Guide wheel- a set of wheels, which guide the train so that it doesn`t fly off the track sideways.
 
Wooden coaster- any coaster with wooden rails.
 
Wooden structure- a feature of  a steel coaster, where the underlying structure is made of wood.
