Ruffed Lemurs are very interesting. They are called the "ghosts of Madagascar".  Although they have a scary nickname, they are not scaring away deforestation. The Ruffed Lemur`s biggest threat is deforestation. Ruffed Lemurs live in the East Coast of several rainforests of Madagascar.

Ruffed Lemurs grow up to two feet long, not including their tails. On the other hand, their tails can grow to 23 inches in length. They weigh about 8 to 11 pounds. Their main food is fruit.

Their gestation period is 4 to 5 months. Ruffed Lemurs have a high rate of twin births. Their life span is only 19 years in captivity.  At this time, mankind does not know their natural habitat.

Because Ruffed Lemurs have a habit of sunning themselves in the early morning, the holy sun worshipers protected the Lemurs. As time passed and the population grew larger these beliefs faded.

Lemurs are extremely close to being extinct because 90% of Madagascar`s forests are destroyed. The Ruffed Lemur is a large species of the lemur family.

Because the Ruffed Lemur`s coat of fur is so dense, no water is absorbed into its coat when it rains. They also use their hair to line their nests. Lemurs can be black and white or black and red.

Males and females are approximately the same size. All lemurs are very active. They jump from limb to limb. Lemurs have a better sense of smell then human beings. They use scent to help them find their food. Lemurs use sound to communicate, protect their property, and to warn other lemurs of danger. They are much like us.
