The rusty-spotted cat lives in Southern India and Sri Lanka. It`s about half the size of a house cat. The length of the cat is eight to ten inches, not including the tail that is more than half the length of the body. It can weigh from two to four and a half lbs., making it the smallest cat in the world. Its fur is gray and covered with small, rust colored spots; this is how it got its name. The soles of its feet are black. Its habitat is in dry grassland, scrubland, and open forests. At times, it has been found near human settlements.

Like all 37 species of cats, it is a carnivore. It eats small mammals, birds, insects, reptiles, and frogs. They have also been known to kill domestic chickens.

It`s a nocturnal animal, which means it`s awake during the night. During the day, it hides in trees and sleeps. Not much is known about their social system, but they are probably lone animals, which means they don`t run in large groups.

An expecting mother cat will carry her unborn for 50-56 days while they develop and have two- four kittens at a time. The babies are not born with the markings of an adult cat. They live for about 10- 15 years.

The rusty - spotted cat is endangered because of humans, loss of habitats, and poaching.
