The Birth of the World Cup
In 1926 Jules Rimet, President of FIFA (Federation International de Footbal Association), suggested organizing a world soccer tournament involving national teams with both professional and amateur players from all over the world. The first World Cup game was played between France and Mexico on July 13, 1930.

Every four years since then, national teams from around the world compete in qualifying rounds for the right to play in the month long World Cup Tournament.
