PAPER AND PRINTING One of China's ingenous invention was paper.  The first paper was made from silk rags.  Later paper was made from bamboo, hemp, or bark.  Paper was invented by Cai Lun the head of the imperial workshops in A.D. 105.  There was a high demand for paper from the Hanna civil service and it was mass produced in government factories.  In addition to the development of paper, wood block printing was developed in the 9th century.    By the end of the Tang dynasty there were bookshops in all Chinese cities.  Movable type was invented by Bi Sheng in the Song dynasty but it didnít wok well because there were to many type symbols so this did not replace block printing              Interesting facts on printing Seal prints was the 1st form of writing; they were carved from stone, wood, horn, bronze, or ceramics.  They were used on official documents, works of art and correspondence. 1st books were made from strips of bamboo which were tied together in a bundle. 2nd books after paper was invented were long scrolls and handwritten in vertical columns and read from right to left.
