La Venta  La Venta is located on a large island that is surrounded by swamps and rivers. It is near the northern coast of is what now southern Mexico. In the middle of La Venta is mound about eighty-two feet high. Behind it is smaller mounds and a large plaza surrounded by stone pillars. Inside of the plaza are four enormous stone heads. They could represent kings that died. The are up to about eight feet tall and the largest one weighed twenty-four tons!   Teotihuacan - Place of the Gods  About 30 miles northeast of Mexico City lies the ruins of the city Teotihuacan. It was built around 150 a.d. Gods known from later civilizations were depicted in temple carvings and paintings. One of the temples is called he Pyramid of the Sun.
