Did you know that when you drive a car, read a book, drink coffee, or eat chocolate you are using some of the many products the tropical rainforest provides us? Can we really afford to lose it? If we really need the rainforest then why are we destroying it? Humans are the main predators of the rainforests: we cut it down, tear it up, and even rid it of the products we need and use!! It is not just the trees and plants we lose out on, it is taking away animals homes and making animals extinct. Four species are lost
from tropical deforestation, not even each year, but each hour! And with every tree we get rid of 41 species of ant loose their home; we cut allot of trees too! We cut 500,000 trees every hour! At this rate we may lose 20% of worldwide species between now and in 30 years!
It is said by scientists and nature preservers, that in a century or so we may not even have the Amazon Rainforest! With no more rainforests the cure for Cancer, AIDS, and many more diseases and small sicknesses like malaria, influenza, and diarrhea, are pretty much out of our grasp. And 70% of the plants identified as having anti-cancer properties were discovered in a tropical rainforest!
Some things you can do to help save the rainforest are switch to tree-free toilet paper, boycott destructive companies, reduce beef consumption, educate others about the rainforest, invest in rainforest communities, support the Grassroots, and join the rainforest action network. With these tips and allot of work people in your area could help save part of the rainforest.
Some of the stuff the rainforest provides us are oxygen, Brazil nuts, cocoa, curare, pineapples, rubber, herbs, pharmaceuticals, bananas, plantains, furs, animals, fruit, oil, figs, palms, cashews, and a list so long it probably wouldn't fit on this page of stuff we rely on from the rainforest. It is very rare to go a single day without using some sort of rainforest product.
You may ask- "Why even care about the rainforest?" We have part of that answer. For one thing, rainforests regulate rainfall on a global level, which will eventually effect global climate. They are the biggest source of oxygen in the world! What will happen when that oxygen producing beauty is gone? Also, rainforests are the most productive ecosystems in the world, and they contain over half of the living species in the world! The other part of "Why you should save the rainforest?" is probably because of the beauty and secrets it hold within it.
Help save the rainforest: it will effect you, the animals, and even the next generation of humans before it's too late!
It may already be...too late.
