Precambrian

Era

Little is known about the Precambrian era. It was 4.5 billion years ago. That was a long, long, long time ago.

The Precambrian era is divided into three periods; the Proterozoic, the Archeon and the Hadeon periods. This era covered 90% of the entire history of Earth. There wasn't much life, only single-celled organisms. The first fossils were estimated 3.5 billion years ago. That means there was no life for 1 billion years!

Some of the earth was very cold. It was covered with huge bluish glacial icesheets. Some of the earth was boiling with volcanoes. During this time there was lots of liquid rock, boiling sulfur, raining asteroids and rocks and lots of craters. The oceans were also forming. There were no forming continents at this time.
