There are many different techniques, procedures and type of ways that you can train your dog. But, for simplicity's sake I will just go over 1 technique for every command that you can teach your dog to follow. For more information visit your public library.
You should start teaching your dog the difference between right and wrong as soon as it joins your household. Your goals for teaching your dog obedience should be somewhere around the guide lines of having it entirely housebroken and responding to it's name. Having it know the difference between sit, stay, come, lie down, and no. Heeling without a leash, should be controlled in a variety of environments. It should be relaxed in cars and not try to jump out windows, and it should not beg or take food from strangers.
Heel
When teaching your dog to heel first, you must make sure that your lead is long enough to let the dog walk , but short enough so that you still have command over your dogs movements. First you walk with your dog comfortably. Then your right hand that's holding the leash anchors over your hip and you gently push on your dogs bottom to get it to sit. Try this technique several times. Remember when giving commands use the same words over and over and don't use good and bad in the same sentence.
Come
To teach your dog how to come it must first know how to sit. First place your dog in a sitting position and slowly step away from it still holding on to it's leash. Then slowly pull the leash towards you and say come. Soon your dog should be coming to you without a leash. Remember always use encouragement as a reward for an accomplishment.
Lie down
Pick up your dogs paw and push it down on the shoulder in the opposite direction while firmly telling it to lie down. Then follow the same procedure only now you tell your dog to rise or sit-up.
Sit
The best time to teach your dog to sit is after it has learned to walk and stay. This way it is stable on it's legs and is able to sit for a longer amount of time. The first step is to walk with your dog then to stop and firmly tell it to stay. Then facing your dog you lightly press on it's rear and say sit. Remember to shower your dog with praise when it has performed well. When giving your dog treats because it has learned a new trick be sure to watch it's calorie intake.
Stay
In order for your dog to learn to stay ti must be able to walk and sit. The first step to learning this task is to make sure you have patience and belief in your dog. Now that we've got the basics down your ready to start. First tell your dog to sit then you slowly back away while holding on to the leash. If you dog starts to rise firmly say sit. If your attempt to stop your dog from coming towards you fails firmly say "bad dog" and start over. This time make sure that your dog understand you. You can do this by keeping eye level with your dog and not sending mixed messages. By this I mean if you say "bad dog" don't pet your dog while doing it. Your dog has to know who's in charge. If you and your dog, as a team are determined to succeed you will!
