MAKING A KITE

-You will need-

Paper or fabric, sticks, glue, and string or cord. The paper you choose must be strong enough so that the wind can't blow through it. The best kind of glue is called Evo-stik which you can find at a supply store (or Elmers glue will do).

-How to bind and glue the sticks-

First take two sticks and lay them in a crossed position. (1)Tie on a piece of string or cord near the cross. (2)Wind the cord around the joint. (3) Then weave it around, over and under the sticks. (4) Cover the cord with dabs of glue and leave it to dry.

-How to frame a kite-

Most kites need a frame of string or cord. It helps the kite keep its shape and makes a firm edge for the cover. (1) Cut a notch in the end of each stick. You might want a grownup to help you with this. (2) Tie two pieces of string to the end of one of the sticks. Leave a fairly long end. (3) Keeping the string taut, take it across to the notch on the next stick and wind it two or three times around. (4) Wind the string around all the sticks until you get  back to where you started. Then tie the two ends together.

-How to cover the kite-

(1) Lay the framework on the material you have chosen for the cover. (2) Cut around the kite, but cut the cover about an inch bigger so you can fold it underneath the kite frame. Then cut off the corners. Next bend the edges over the side of the frame and glue or tape the edge down, but before doing that cut little notches in any curved edges of the cover, so it will be smooth when glued.

-Attaching the bridle-

Bridle strings usually attach to the sticks or material.  Measure the width of your kite.  Cut the string three times the width. Then tie the bridle to the sticks or punch two holes in the material and tie it through those. You can make a loop in the middle of the bridle or tie a ring on it. Then attach the flying string to the loop or ring.
