To steer a kite you may pull the right side of your spool and the kite will turn to the right. To steer left you can pull the left side and it will turn left. If you would like to just go straight hold both sides level. To land the kite, you simply pull down on both sides of the spool. Flying a kite is very simple once you get the kite off the ground. The next time you take a ride in your Mom or Dad's car, hold your hand outside of the window with the front of your hand down and your hand level to the ground. You will feel the force of the wind against your thumb and index finger, but your hand stays in the same place. Now slowly rotate your hand, so that it is at an angle to the cemented road. It will try to fly up and back toward you. Like your hand, a flying kite is held at an angle (against the ground). It does not count on itself for a smooth ride, it counts on the wind to help it along. To help the kite along, the wind blows against it to make that effect. 90% of the wind goes under the kite to help it fly, while 10% of the wind goes over it to keep it level in the air. The air streams meet at the back side at the same time. The kite pulls all of the string on the spool. These forces keep the kite nearly steady while soaring in the weightless air.
