Alana
Hi! My name is Alana and I am attending Lehua Elementary and am in the 6th grade. I am 11 years old.
I love listening to music and playing sports. My favorite color is blue. Some of my favorite music artists are Mya, Forte, Puff Daddy, Eminem, Jay-z and 'NSync. Currently, some of my favorite songs are: My Name is..., Angel of Mine, No Scrubs and C'est-La Vie. Some of my hobbies include: talking on the phone, shopping, playing basketball, singing, rollerblading, and hanging out with my friends.
I have 3 brothers and one sister. I live with both of my parents and 10 fish. I'm trying to convince my Mom to let me get a dog. For now, I play with my friend's dog Patches. I like playing with dogs, especially puppies.
For Think Quest Junior, I have one teammate, and her name is Caroline. We have two coaches, Mr. Kevin Matsunaga and Ms. Donna Kawasaki. Mr. Matsunaga and Ms. Kawasaki are great coaches because they're dedicated, hard working, and always willing to help. Not to mention, they're great teachers too!
My job while creating this website was to find books that have information that we can use to draft something and to type the draft. I also worked on creating page links and tried them out too. I also drew the pictures of the shops for our main page, so Caroline could digitally color it and fix it up. I helped Caroline to choose the fonts, background colors, font colors, and pictures to put on the pages. Caroline and I helped each other to edit our papers, add more ideas and ask for opinions on things. I also helped to call places to schedule tours, went to two surfing lessons so we could write our directions page with first hand experience, took pictures and notes at a surfing museum in Haleiwa, and even went around the North and South shores taking pictures.
What I learned from Think Quest Junior is learning new things is fun and when you create something with the knowledge that you have, you're always looking back on what you've already done so you're not forgetting the information at all. I also learned that teamwork is really important because without it none of our project would be fully completed. One person could be assigned one thing and another person could be assigned something totally different, but if they both don't check up on each other both of their assignments would only be half done. So I learned that even if you're doing your own thing, if you can help with something, help! Because in the long run, helping them is helping you too!
Everything that I mentioned above that I helped with, I couldn't do alone! So I'd like to say thanks to Caroline and my teachers for helping me when I needed it, and giving suggestions and ideas.
My name is Caroline and I am 12 1/2 years old. I go to Lehua Elementary and am in the 6th grade.
Some of my favorite colors are baby blue, baby pink, and silver. I like listening to music on cds or the radio. I like talking to my friends on my computer and on the phone. Ice-skating lessons is one of my favorite hobbies, but I'd never be in a competition. I have a skateboard and am often out on the roads with one of my best friends.
I have a dog named Belle and she's black and brown. My brother has a turtle and my sister has a rabbit. I used to have a turtle named Rose, but she died and now is buried in my backyard.
I spend most of my time on my computer, online.
When I heard of the Think Quest contest, I thought it would be so cool to be creating web-page about surfing. Back then we had 3 team mates but one was too busy to help. This was really fun to do because we went to lots of places. First, we went to Waimea to take pictures of waves and to interview some surfers. Then, we went to some surf shops and learned a lot about how fins are put on, and the average cost of some boards. After that, we went to the Town -n- Country factory to learn the processing of a board. It was really cool to learn about fiber glass and foam. Then, we went to Clark Foam. It was a big warehouse full of blanks that were going to be sent to companies. Alana and I went to Waikiki to learn to surf. Hans Hedemann gave us lessons. It was so fun! I never thought surfing was so easy. They're really good teachers over there and I'd love to go back. I think our last place we went was a surfing museum. We learned a lot about history.
The main part I played while working with my teammate, Alana, was getting books for information and writing out the draft while Alana did the same. Working together, we got all the pages completed and ready for typing quickly. My job was linking the pages together while Alana chose the color for them.
I also drew the pictures of the tails on one of the questions in the quiz. I took a lot of the pictures including the splash page. Linking all the pages was a job I had while Alana was e-mailing most of the stores we went to asking them some questions we came up with. It was fun choosing the font for the pages because Alana and I had to go through a lot of them to find some we liked.
I think I really learned a lot about surfing and how waves form, but more importantly, I learned that things come out better if you use teamwork. Who knows? Your partner could have a great idea and combine the two to make a great thing even better!
