Gladys Knight and the PipsGladys Knight might be known as being a singer without a group, but actually, she was with the Pips for a long time. On May 28, 1944, Gladys Knight was born in Atlanta, Georgia. She grew up as a child star on the gospel circuit and joined the Pips because they sang at her family parties. One of the Pips was her brother Bubba, and the other two were cousins William and Edward. The band was not very famous until they signed with Motown records in the late 60's. Gladys Knight was one of the more soulful women who sang for Motown records at that time. The band got a few rewards, but there is one that is the greatest of all. In 1996, Gladys Knight and the Pips were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Also, in 1973 the band switched record labels and won two Grammy awards for the songs "Midnight Train to Georgia" and "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me." In the late 70's, Gladys Knight started to record by herself, and the Pips started making records without her. The group finally got back together in the late 80's. To learn more about Gladys Knight
