Tammy Wynett

Tammy Wynett was a wonderful singer. Most country music fans have enjoyed her music.  On May 5, 1942, Virginia Wynett Pugh was born in Mississippi, in her grandfather’s old shack that her family called home. At the age of 17 she was married, but at 24 she was divorced and was raising 3 children on a hairdresser's pay. Most of Tammy’s songs came from women who were experiencing divorce. Her kind of music was women’s favorite to listen to while washing dishes. Tammy Wynett’s first big hit was “Apartment Number Nine.” She sold over six million copies of “Stand By Your Man” and made the top hits with this song. Tammy won a Grammy for this great song that made her most famous. Another big hit for Tammy was “D-I-V-O-R-C-E.” Eventually she began to sing with George Jones. A song she recorded with George was “Golden Rings” which also made the top of the charts. She was married to George Jones, but unhappily the marriage only lasted six years. Another one of Tammy Wynett’s hits was “I Don’t Wanna Play House.” This earned her another Grammy Award. How she must have loved receiving this for she was just becoming well known in the country music world.  In 1967 she received this great award . 1993 brought Tammy another great song “Honky Tonk Angels.” She got to sing this one as a trio with Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn. Tammy seemed happy in her fourth marriage but she died suddenly. We wish Virginia Wynett Pugh could be here with us today. Maybe if she was, she would continue to write and perform her wonderful music. How most of us miss the wonderful music Tammy Wynett has given us. She will be a legend in country music.
